  10.   The initial card doesn't have much useful information, since no database has yet been opened for browsing.  To open a database, you click on the "Open Book" icon at the top of the screen.  A standard file dialog box will appear and ask you to select an indexed file for browsing.  (The next card shows the result of opening one of my databases, "890101-0910online", an unimaginatively-named collection of my personal online correspondence for the first 8 months of 1989.)

  12.   REMEMBER:  a database file must be indexed before it can be browsed.  The process of indexing creates alphabetized lists of all the words in your database.  Those index lists are what allows "Free Text Browser" to search so rapidly and efficiently through multi-megabyte archives of information.
